A group of female Republican senators has introduced the Save Women’s Sports Act in Harrisburg. The proposed legislation aims to prevent men from participating in women's sports, ensuring that athletic opportunities are preserved for women.

The senators behind Senate Bill 9 include Judy Ward (R-30), Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-28), Lisa Baker (R-20), Michele Brooks (R-50), Camera Bartolotta (R-46), Tracy Pennycuick (R-24), Rosemary Brown (R-40), Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-27), Dawn Keefer (R-31) and President Pro Tempore Kim Ward (R-39). They assert that the bill supports Title IX's original intent to eliminate discrimination and ensure equal access to sports for female athletes.

“Today we are sadly seeing the landmark protections that Title IX initially provided to women being eroded by unelected bureaucrats, as men claiming to be women unfairly compete in women’s sports,” said Judy Ward. She emphasized the physiological advantages men possess and how their inclusion in women's sports diminishes opportunities for female athletes.

Kristin Phillips-Hill added, “The integrity of women’s sports is under attack, and without action, female athletes will pay the price.” She highlighted the importance of maintaining a fair playing field for future generations.

Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward expressed support, stating, “Today is a great day for female athletes across Pennsylvania as republican senators reintroduce the ‘Save Women’s Sports Act’.”

Instances where male participation has impacted female athletes were cited. Lia Thomas's victory at the 2022 NCAA swimming championship was mentioned as an example where a male athlete allegedly deprived female swimmers of gold medals. Additionally, there have been reports of injuries caused by male competitors in various sports events.

Michele Brooks stressed that fairness extends beyond safety: “It is our responsibility to ensure that young women and girls have access to fair competition and equal opportunities.”

Lisa Baker noted, “This bill establishes as state policy the principles of fair play...ensuring a safer playing field for women and girls in sports.”

Camera Bartolotta described it as protecting "common-sense values" by ensuring fairness in athletic competitions. Incidents involving significant injuries caused by male participants during games were also referenced.

Tracy Pennycuick reflected on her personal experiences: “As a mom of now grown women, I know the importance playing sports had in their young lives.”

Rosemary Brown highlighted her experience as a former college athlete: “I want to ensure that female athletes always have these fair and positive opportunities.”

Lynda Schlegel Culver stated her commitment to ensuring fair competition for all athletes: “This bill aims to address the complexities surrounding participation in women’s sports.”

Dawn Keefer concluded with a call for inclusivity: “Those on the left side of the aisle claim to be all about inclusion – now’s the time to prove it.”

The bill is currently under review by the Senate Education Committee. If passed, it will proceed to consideration by the House.
