State grants exceeding $2.8 million have been allocated for various projects and purchases in Luzerne County, as announced by Representatives Dane Watro (R-Luzerne/Schuylkill) and Mike Cabell (R-Luzerne), along with Senator Dave Argall (R-29).
The funding will be distributed across several initiatives: Hazleton City will receive $250,000 for Phase IV renovations at the Hazleton LaunchBox building, $424,000 for demolishing a blighted property on W. Sixth St., and $533,138 for window improvements at the Hazleton One Community Center. Additionally, Hazle Township is set to obtain $34,005 to purchase a new vehicle for the Hazleton Blind Association. The Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority has been awarded $250,000 for constructing a dining lodge at Camp Kresge in Dennison Township. Penn Lake Park Borough will benefit from a $750,000 grant aimed at rehabilitating the Penn Lake Park Dam.
“Some of this state funding is going toward important economic development projects in Hazleton that will keep the city’s positive momentum moving forward,” said Watro. He emphasized the benefits of these developments including reduced costs and improved security.
“Towns and neighborhoods throughout southern Luzerne County will benefit from this funding,” added Argall.
Cabell expressed his support stating, “I’ve visited Camp Kresge with Sen. Argall, and we both love what the Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA is able to offer to our youth through this pristine venue." He also highlighted their awareness of issues concerning the Penn Lake Park Borough dam.
These grants are part of the Local Share Account program which uses gaming revenue to support community and economic development projects.
Moreover, an additional state grant of $600,000 was granted to the Hazleton Area School District for roofing and HVAC upgrades at Arthur Street Elementary School under the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program. The Commonwealth Financing Authority approved these grants as part of its role in overseeing Pennsylvania's economic growth investments.
