State funding totaling more than $1.1 million for transportation infrastructure improvement projects in the Hazleton area and Kline Township, Schuylkill County, were awarded today, according to Rep. Dane Watro (R-Luzerne/Schuylkill) and Sen. David Argall (R-Schuylkill/Carbon/Luzerne). The two lawmakers played a key role in securing the grants through PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund.
The grant awards are as follows:
- City of Hazelton – $300,000 to improve two blocks of Alter Street with new concrete curbing, sidewalk, curb ramps and reinforcement.
- Hazle Township – $610,171 for milling, paving, concrete curb replacement, line painting, new signage, sidewalks, traffic control and ADA improvements to Commerce Drive.
- Kline Township Supervisors – $216,022 to resurface, restripe and trim branches over residential and commercial roadways in the township.
“The grants are for important projects designed to enhance the streetscapes in these municipalities, which is critical to attracting new development and jobs,” said Watro. “I gladly joined Sen. Argall in wholeheartedly supporting the projects, which will benefit motorists and pedestrians alike once they are completed.”
“I’m grateful that this highly competitive state funding is coming to communities in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties,” said Argall. “In Hazle Township and in Hazleton, improved road and sidewalk projects will enhance traffic control, ADA access and pedestrian safety; and in Kline Township a road resurfacing project that includes the trimming of tree branches over the roadway will also improve safety.”
The local improvements were three of 66 projects in 32 counties that were awarded over $51 million. Established by Act 89 of 2013, the Multimodal Transportation Fund provides financial assistance to municipalities, councils of governments, businesses, economic development organizations, public transportation agencies, ports and rail freight entities. By improving transportation assets this program seeks to enhance communities' pedestrian safety and transit revitalization.
