HARRISBURG – Rep. Alec Ryncavage (R-Luzerne) expressed his thoughts on Gov. Josh Shapiro's proposed budget plan for the 2024-25 fiscal year. In a statement, Ryncavage acknowledged the governor's efforts to make Pennsylvania more competitive but raised concerns about the potential consequences of increased spending.
Ryncavage specifically highlighted his worries about the depletion of the Rainy Day fund and the possibility of tax increases. He questioned the feasibility of some of the revenue projections mentioned by the governor, emphasizing the need for a close examination of key issues such as education and Medicaid funding. The proposed changes to higher education funding also drew Ryncavage's attention, calling for transparency and accountability in the decision-making process.
The representative also criticized Gov. Shapiro's proposal to limit the Legislature's input on tax dollars allocated to for-profit colleges and universities. Ryncavage stressed that the governor's plan or ability to address the partisan gridlock in the House and resume legislative work had not been addressed.
Ryncavage pointed out the lack of progress in the House of Representatives, noting that this was the first session day of 2024, 37 days into the year. He expressed disappointment that no voting sessions had taken place and no legislation had been debated. Comparing the current session to previous years, Ryncavage highlighted the significant decrease in voting session days under a Democratic majority.
Expressing his concerns, Ryncavage warned of the possibility of another delayed budget in the future. He called for a collaborative effort to avoid partisan gridlock and ensure the timely completion of the budget process.
As the budget discussions continue, Ryncavage's statement serves as a reminder of the need for careful consideration and transparency in fiscal decision-making.
