A resolution to designate April 2025 as "Community College Month" in Pennsylvania has been unanimously approved by the House Education Committee. This development was announced by Rep. Dane Watro (R-Luzerne), a member of the committee. The resolution will now move forward for consideration by the full House of Representatives.

Rep. Watro introduced an amendment to update statistics related to community college enrollment and their economic impact in the state. He emphasized the importance of these institutions, stating, “Community colleges are vital to Pennsylvania’s growth, offering students access to affordable higher education and enhanced economic opportunities.” He added that they provide essential skills and workforce training, contributing significantly to the state's future.

Pennsylvania's 15 community colleges, including Luzerne County Community College located in Nanticoke, serve approximately 240,000 students. These colleges collaborate with over 2,000 employers across the state, providing more than $14 million in contracted workforce training. According to data from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, 75% of community college programs align with high-priority occupations such as nursing, computer technology, and early childhood education.

The initiative underscores the role of community colleges in fostering educational and economic development within Pennsylvania.
