The Schuylkill County Historical Society has been awarded a Cultural and Historical Support Grant amounting to $8,000 by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). This announcement was made by Reps. Dane Watro (R-Luzerne/Schuylkill), Jamie Barton (R-Berks/Schuylkill), Joanne Stehr (R-Northumberland/Schuylkill), Tim Twardzik (R-Schuylkill), and Sen. Dave Argall (R-29).

“We are pleased the Schuylkill County Historical Society was approved for this funding,” said the lawmakers. “Preserving our past for future generations is critically important and the society does a wonderful job of doing that at its museum.”

Located in Pottsville, the society serves as an educational resource offering artifacts, collections, interactive tours, seminars, genealogical resources, special exhibits, events, and educational programs for young people.

The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program aims to strengthen the Commonwealth’s museum community by supporting general operations of eligible museums and official county historical societies not assisted by other state agency funding programs. PHMC recently approved $1.9 million in funding for 158 eligible museums and historical societies across 58 counties. Grants were allocated using a formula based on a percentage of each organization’s annual operating budget.
