HARRISBURG – Rep. Dane Watro and Sen. Dave Argall recently revealed a substantial low-interest loan of over $1.4 million granted to the Hazleton City Authority for crucial water system enhancements. The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) approved the funding for the project.

“The authority is seeking to make significant upgrades to its water distribution system along Lions Drive in Hazle Township, and this loan now makes the project possible,” stated Watro, emphasizing the urgent need for improvements due to the aging and leaking water lines affecting service and fire safety.

“This highly competitive state funding will directly support the brave work of Hazleton’s firefighters and improve water service for thousands of homes,” added Argall, highlighting the broader community benefits of the project in enhancing infrastructure and public safety.

The loan will primarily facilitate the replacement of approximately 1,500 feet of cast iron pipe with a new 12-inch ductile iron distribution system piping and essential accessories like valves, shut-offs, hydrants, and blow-offs. These upgrades aim to bolster the authority’s capacity to meet customer demand and ensure adequate fire protection for the region, which serves over 14,000 residential customers.

PENNVEST, established in 1988, plays a vital role in providing financial aid for drinking water, sewer, and stormwater projects across Pennsylvania, contributing to the advancement of crucial infrastructure in communities throughout the state.

The initiative spearheaded by Watro and Argall signifies a significant investment in the modernization of Hazleton’s water system, reflecting a commitment to enhancing public services and ensuring the well-being of residents.
