Comcast Cable Communications LLC has been awarded almost $4.35 million in federal funding for broadband expansion projects in Luzerne County, as announced by Rep. Mike Cabell (R-Luzerne). Cabell emphasized the importance of reliable high-speed broadband service in our daily lives, stating, “These expansion projects are going to impact folks in unserved and underserved areas of the county who have been waiting years for internet connection. I am pleased to see these projects finally get underway.”
The funding, which was approved at a meeting of the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority in Harrisburg, is part of the state’s Broadband Infrastructure Program (BIP). The authority approved over $204 million for 53 broadband expansion projects statewide, with a focus on locations lacking access to 25/3 Mbps reliable service. The competitive grant program supports the extension of existing last-mile cable modem and fiber-to-the-premise broadband networks, as well as large-scale regional projects that aim to improve broadband availability for a large number of eligible addresses.
The initiative is expected to make a significant impact on the residents of Luzerne County, especially those in rural and underserved areas, by providing them with access to essential broadband services. With this funding, the projects will now be able to move forward, bringing much-needed internet connectivity to those who have been waiting for years.
