On April 10, 2024, Rep. Mike Cabell and the Luzerne County Republican delegation have taken a significant step by signing the House discharge petition to push for a voter ID constitutional amendment to move out of committee and reach the full House of Representatives for a vote.
Representative Cabell expressed frustration over the delay in advancing the voter ID constitutional amendment, stating, "This important constitutional amendment, that has enjoyed broad public bipartisan support, has needlessly been bottled up in committee for over a year and time is of the essence for the House to act." He highlighted the widespread support for the amendment, with 73% of Pennsylvania residents backing the requirement for voters to show photo identification when casting their ballots.
In a bid to restore trust in the election process, Cabell emphasized the urgency of moving the legislation forward, whether through a constitutional amendment or a statutory change, to ensure it is presented to voters in the November election. He added, "I join my Luzerne County Republican colleagues in frustration that such a simple measure that would restore trust in our election process continues to be stymied in committee."
The proposed voter ID constitutional amendment aims to be in place for the November General Election, requiring approval by the General Assembly by early July. Cabell also introduced House Bill 1498 earlier this year, a statutory voter ID bill that has faced similar delays in committee.
The delegation's efforts align with the sentiments of a majority of Pennsylvanians who believe that implementing measures like voter ID requirements is essential for ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
