Rep. Mike Cabell (R-Luzerne) has announced plans to introduce a bill aimed at addressing the unlawful entry of illegal immigrants into Pennsylvania. Citing concerns over rising crime rates and a surge in overdose deaths nationwide, Cabell emphasized the need for action to safeguard Pennsylvania citizens.
In a statement, Cabell highlighted the motivations behind his proposed legislation, stating, "While it is undeniable that many entering the United States seek better lives and opportunities, the country has recently witnessed a series of high-profile violent crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. Additionally, the number of overdose deaths last year was the highest total in history."
Acknowledging the necessity of enhancing protections for the state's residents, Cabell asserted, "We obviously need to do something to better protect Pennsylvania citizens, and my bill would help to do just that by cracking down on those who choose to come here illegally."
The bill put forth by Cabell aims to establish two criminal offenses related to illegal entry from foreign nations and illegal re-entry by certain individuals. Specifically, it seeks to penalize aliens who enter or attempt to enter Pennsylvania directly from a foreign nation at locations other than lawful ports of entry. Furthermore, individuals who re-enter the U.S. after being previously deported would also face legal consequences under the proposed legislation.
Drawing inspiration from the Texas immigration law SB4, which grants state law enforcement the authority to arrest migrants suspected of entering the country illegally, Cabell's bill reflects a proactive approach to addressing immigration-related issues at the state level.
As Cabell moves forward with his initiative, he is actively seeking co-sponsors for the legislation. For those interested in viewing or downloading a broadcast-quality video of Cabell discussing his bill, further information can be accessed through provided channels.
