Representative Alec Ryncavage (R-Luzerne) has announced that over $56 million in funding will be allocated to road and bridge projects in his district. This funding has been authorized for release by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. Ryncavage expressed his pride in keeping his area relevant in Harrisburg, stating, "Local governments and community organizations have been struggling to balance limited funds and needed improvements. These dollars will help undertake essential work so our communities can continue to thrive."
The infrastructure projects that will be funded, at Ryncavage's request, include Church Road, Crestwood Drive, Hanover Street, Oak Hill Road, and the West Nanticoke Bridge Reconstruction. The West Nanticoke Bridge, in particular, has been recommended for rehabilitation and partial replacement by Luzerne County's outside engineer. The engineer's report highlighted that the bridge is "considered fracture critical" and "structurally deficient." As a result, it currently has a weight limit. The bridge, which is 100 years old, was downgraded to a 15-ton weight limit in 2020 due to inspection findings.
Ryncavage emphasized the importance of the bridge, stating that it plays a crucial role in reducing emergency response times and fostering economic development in the region. He acknowledged that the ultimate decision on the course of action for the bridge will rest with county officials. Currently, Luzerne County Council and the administration are reviewing a detailed report that provides them with a comprehensive overview of the available options.
Ryncavage expressed his satisfaction with the investments being made in the communities, particularly those that focus on safety and expanding the tax base. He concluded by saying, "Infrastructure improvements are essential, and I'm pleased to see these significant investments made in our communities."
