HARRISBURG – Rep. Mike Cabell (R-Luzerne) and Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) today announced a low-interest state loan of more than $3.6 million awarded to the Freeland Municipal Authority for a water tank replacement project. The funding was approved by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).

“We must continue to invest in aging infrastructure, and this loan does just that,” said Cabell. “Hopefully, the financial help will also stave off any rate increases for the thousands of customers this system serves in Freeland Borough, Foster Township, and Butler Township.”

The project involves replacing the authority’s Upper Lehigh Standpipe tank with a new, 100,000-gallon elevated water storage tank on Oak Street. The new tank will feature modern equipment to enhance water quality and storage capacity. Additionally, infrastructure improvements include extending water mains and constructing a new building for controls and water sampling systems.

The old tank’s deteriorating condition has led to water quality and quantity issues, impacting nearly 2,200 households across three municipalities. The new tank aims to address these challenges and ensure a more reliable water supply for the community.

PENNVEST, established in 1988, provides financial assistance for water, sewer, and stormwater projects in Pennsylvania communities. This loan signifies a significant investment in improving water infrastructure to benefit residents in Luzerne County.
