Penn State Hazleton issued the following announcement on Nov. 27.
Students across the country face many challenges of getting in and getting through college. As federal and state support for higher education diminishes, students and their families are facing increased financial burden and debt. Penn State has long been committed to serving students for whom higher education may otherwise be out of reach.
At Penn State Hazleton:
•43 percent of our students are the first in their family to attend college
•40 percent of students hail from low-income families
•89 percent of students receive some form of financial aid
The financial struggles of Penn State Hazleton students have deepened as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the last eight months, many students and their families have been forced to navigate the challenges associated with lost full-time and part-time job opportunities. The availability of scholarship funds to help defray the cost of education is often a deciding factor in whether bright and motivated students can attend Penn State Hazleton. This is true now more than ever.
To achieve our urgent goal to attract and retain the highest caliber students, we are asking our alumni and friends to join together with us to help students with financial need walk through our doors and, ultimately, across the stage on graduation day through a contribution to the Penn State Hazleton General Scholarship Fund.
