In response to recent announcements by Penn State University that identified several branch campuses, including Penn State Wilkes-Barre, as potential sites for closure, Senator Lisa Baker has voiced significant concerns. These concerns emphasize the need for more transparency and community involvement in the decision-making process.
Senator Baker, reflecting on her long-standing association with the campus as a former board member, expressed her surprise at the announcement. “As someone who previously sat on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Advisory Board for many years, I can tell you that the announcement that the campus has been identified for potential closure comes as quite a shock to the community,” she stated.
The potential closure has generated anxiety among students, faculty, and local businesses dependent on the campus. Baker mentioned receiving numerous messages conveying disappointment and devastation from both inside and outside the campus community.
Highlighting her exclusion from prior discussions, Senator Baker said, “I was not informed of these decisions prior to the public announcement, and to date, no one has shown me a plan.” A meeting with Acting Secretary of Education Dr. Carrie Rowe revealed that for a campus closure, approval from the Secretary of Education is required. This requirement included communication with Penn State University President Dr. Neeli Bendapudi.
Baker maintains that closure is not inevitable, stating, “Therefore, I am not accepting closure as a foregone conclusion. There is more due diligence required.” She criticized Penn State leadership for potentially prioritizing the main campus over satellite campuses despite previous budget warning signals.
This situation, according to Baker, necessitates cooperation among political, educational, and community leaders to find a sustainable solution. She affirmed her commitment by saying, “To that end, I will continue to be part of this conversation.”
