A resolution to recognize March 25, 2025, as “National Medal of Honor Day” in Pennsylvania has been passed by the state House of Representatives. The resolution, sponsored by Representative Dane Watro from Luzerne and Schuylkill, was adopted without opposition.
Watro highlighted the importance of honoring individuals who have been awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award. “On National Medal of Honor Day, we pause to honor the courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of those who have earned our nation’s highest military distinction,” he explained. “These heroes embody the very essence of selflessness and valor, reminding us of the sacrifices made to protect America’s freedoms. Their legacy continues to inspire generations to serve with honor, integrity and devotion to country.”
The Medal of Honor was established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, with the first awards given in 1863 to six members of Andrews’ Raiders for their involvement in the Civil War’s Great Locomotive Chase.
Since its inception, 3,528 medals have been awarded to soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and coastguardsmen. This includes 382 recipients from Pennsylvania, all but one of whom are now deceased.
