A $3 million investment has been allocated to the R.J. Corman Railroad Company for the Lehigh Tie Project in Bradford and Wyoming Counties, Pennsylvania. The funding comes from the state’s Rail Transportation Assistance (RTAP) and Rail Freight Assistance (RFAP) programs.
Senator Gene Yaw (R-23), Senator Lisa Baker (R-20), Representative Tina Pickett (R-110), and Representative Clint Owlett (R-68) jointly announced the funding, which will be used to rehabilitate approximately 22 miles of track along the Lehigh Line. Planned improvements include replacing ties, adding ballast, and surfacing work.
“These targeted investments recognize the pivotal role freight lines play in grounding our economy and providing a reliable flow of goods throughout the region,” said Yaw. “I look forward to the growth and stability this funding will bring to my district.”
Baker emphasized the railroad’s significance for local industries: “This shortline railroad is a vital component of our local energy economy. It supports area jobs, sustains product suppliers and helps residents and commercial enterprises with their energy costs. These investments are crucial to keep the traffic moving at capacity and ensuring safety.”
Pickett noted that rail improvements support economic development: “Investing in freight rail improvements is an investment in our economy. By strengthening these critical rail lines, we are supporting job creation, business growth and a more reliable supply chain across the region.”
Owlett added: “Rail transport is vital to our Commonwealth’s and our country’s transportation network. The efficient and effective movement of goods means more jobs and opportunities across the Northern Tier.”
The RFAP and RTAP programs are managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Rail, Freight, Ports and Waterways. Pennsylvania leads all states with 65 operating railroads and has over 5,600 miles of track.
